On Friday, February 3, 2012 at 1:00 p.m., a special announcement and commemoration ceremony took place in the New Mexico State Capitol Building Rotunda with Governor Susana Martinez as the keynote speaker. Habitat for Humanity announced the completion of the 600th Habitat House in New Mexico! The 600th house represents the efforts of the entire state working together as a team to help eliminate substandard housing.
Following the Capitol Rotunda activities, on the same day, Habitat hosted an open house at the ReStore Outlet with Steve Thomas from 2-3:30 pm and a dedication and celebration of this exciting milestone event! For the dedication of the 600th house, Santa Fe Mayor David Coss was the keynote speaker and Steve Thomas, former host of the PBS show, “This Old House”, was the Master of Ceremonies.
New Mexico Habitat for Humanity would like to thank the thousands of volunteers, partner families and the following sponsors for their help in achieving this major milestone:, Hunter Douglas, Lowe’s, New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority, Schneider Electric, The Dow Chemical Company, The Home Depot Foundation, United States Government, Valspar, Wells Fargo, Whirlpool Corporation, and Yale Locks & Hardware and countless others.
The 600th house is certainly a major milestone for Habitat for Humanity in New Mexico and the organization is celebrating its success around the world as the 500,000th house was recently completed in Kenya. Having built 6,032 houses in the United States in 2010, Habitat for Humanity became the 6th largest builder of new homes in the country, ranking in the top 10 along with such housing giants D.R. Horton, KB Home, and Pulte/Centex.
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization that operates in nearly 80 countries, including all 50 states in the United States, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity’s help, a family somewhere in the world improves its housing situation every 7 minutes of every hour of every day of the year. In 2010, Habitat for Humanity served a record 74,960 families in need.
